Discover the nature and silence of the mountain and help support a dying way of life on this overnight, weekday mountain experience. This is a truly unique, purposeful and moving experience which will not easily be forgotten. Your hosts will be a local couple, Inês and Miguel, who both share a deep passion and knowledge of the area. Serra da Estrela is Portugal’s highest mountain. Local heritage conservation and revitalisation of the land and the people is truly dynamic here. Typical activities such as hiking, local products and community stories are all here for you to discover. Your accommodation will be a spacious country house with a beautiful view over the Zêzere River and Glacier Valley and Manteigas village only a short drive away. Surrounded by oak, pine and chestnut trees the house is quiet and comfortable. All experiences offered by Ines and Miguel are available in English, Portuguese or Spanish and are dedicated to sharing about the rural way of life, exploring the senses and supporting the local community.

Day 1, Pick Up
We pick you up from your accommodation in the Lisbon area after lunch and drive you to Serra da Estrela.

Manteigas Village
Arrive at the mountain house late afternoon where you will meet your local hosts, Ines and Miguel.

Experience 1, Cheese Tasting
At dusk, you will sample the cheeses of Serra da Estrela, whilst overlooking the Zêzere Glacier Valley. Chosen for you are a special selection of sheep and goat cheeses from Serra da Estrela region. Also chosen for you are some regional wines influenced by the same meteorology, geology, and water as the milk used in the production of Serra da Estrela cheese.

Day 2. Experience 2, Hike with a Traditional Portuguese Shepherd
On this early morning experience you will follow the footsteps of a traditional Portuguese shepherd and his herd as he looks for the greenest pastures. Be part of the shepherd’s working day, listen to his stories and enter into communion with nature. At the end of the hike and upon arriving at the pasture you will share a small meal with the shepherd. This hike has a difficulty level of medium to hard.

Lunch in Manteigas Village
Explore the small, picturesque village of Manteigas; a village and a community profoundly shaped by Serra da Estrela mountains, the grazing of sheep and goats, and the textile industries. Enjoy some more delicious, local foods.

Experience 3, Textile Factory or Serra da Estrela Shepherd Dog Kennels
Your final experience will be a visit to either the local textile factory or the kennels of the most beautiful and purest breed of dog: the Serra da Estrela Shepherd Dog. The textile factory was recently reopened as part of a local regeneration project and now produces high-quality fabrics with contemporary designs but still using the beautiful, vintage machines, taking you back in time and history.

Scenic Tour
Towards the end of your trip your guide will take you on a scenic tour and share with you the mountains most breathtaking roads. You will visit a number of sites of natural beauty including Poço do Inferno, the Monument of Our Lady of Good Star and Covão d'Ametade.

Leave for Lisbon
Late afternoon your driver/guide will drive you back to your accommodation in the Lisbon area.
