Itinerary
The Minho Region comprises of the northwestern province of Portugal and takes its name from the River Minho. Considered the birthplace of Portugal it was here where Portugal´s first king, Alfonso Henriques, was born. The region is also the home of Portugal’s unique wine ´vinho verde.´ Dating back to the 10th century, Guimarães Castle is thought to be the birthplace of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques in 1100. A charming medieval castle surrounded by a small forest. The north of Portugal is well known for its warm hospitality. With many family-owned restaurants you will taste traditional Portuguese dishes from the Minho Region. The Cathedral of Braga is the oldest religious monument in Portugal and its construction lasted for over a century. Then experience a very special place; the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus. This sanctuary is located just outside Braga and is famous for its 116-meter Baroque staircase. Guimarães
To begin your wonderful rural day your tour guide will be waiting for you at your accommodation. Dating back to the 10th century, the Guimarães Castle is thought to be the birthplace of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques in 1100. It is a finely-preserved medieval castle with a huge square keep and eight crenelated towers. It is regarded as a national shrine and includes the Chapel of São Miguel; a Romanesque chapel where mass is celebrated yearly to celebrate King Afonso´s birthday. The north of Portugal is well known for its warm hospitality. With many family-owned restaurants you will taste traditional Portuguese dishes from the Minho Region, such as Caldo Verde - a soup made with cabbage, potatoes, olive oil, garlic and onion and served with chorizo and chunky bread and Bacalhau: salted cod fish used in many Portuguese dishes.

Braga
Portugal’s oldest cathedral, this architectural wonder in Braga is surrounding by winding, cobbled alleys. The Cathedral of Braga is the oldest religious monument in Portugal and its construction building began in the year of 1070 and lasted for over a century! Admire the many beautiful architectural styles including Romanesque, Manueline and Baroque. The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus is located just outside Braga and is famous for its 116-meter Baroque staircase. You can choose to climb the mountain by foot, take the water-powered elevator (!) or drive to the top. We think the walk up is worth it. The staircase is said to symbolize a Christian's ascent to heaven and before Fatima it was here that was the most prominent pilgrimage site. Marvel at the wonderful views over Braga from the summit. At the end of this wonderful day full of memories your tour guide will return to your accommodation.
