Classical, majestic, historical and cultural, Lisbon is a truly ancient city. Built on seven hills the city holds architecture and influences abundant from the Moors, the Romans and the Portuguese Age of Discovery. On this one day private tour you will discover Lisbon´s neighbourhoods and admire the monuments, the views and more including Alfama, Baixa/Chiado, and Belem. Highlights include the famous hilltop castle Castelo de Sao Jorge. Magnificently placed, this castle can been seen from almost anywhere in the city. It’s oldest parts date back to the 6th century. Occupied by the Romans, then the Moors, the castle was eventually dedicated to the St George, the Patron Saint of England, to commemorate the Anglo-Portuguese agreement from 1371 (which still exists to this day). Travel up the Santa Justa elevador and and admire panoramic viewpoints over Lisbon. This 19th century industrial age marvel was used as public transport to carry Lisbon´s people from the lower area of Baixa Chiado to 45m to Largo de Carmo. The top of this Neo-Gothic tower reached via a spiral staircase, has a splendid view of the city. Next you will visit Jeronimos Monastery, a masterpiece of 16th-century Manueline and late gothic architecture. Discoveries Monument stands close by, at an imposing riverside position. A monumental sculpture beside the Tagus, commemorating the golden age of Portuguese history and exploration. Also in Belem and built in the 16th century, the Belem Tower´s original purpose was to be a fort, protecting Lisbon from incoming raids along the Tagus River. This tour is a great way to see so much of the city in one day on a private tour. Castelo de Sao Jorge, Alfama
3
Miradouro da Senhora do Monte
Once a well-kept secret, this viewpoint gives you a view of nearly the entire city. Senhora do Monte is probably the best viewpoint in the city.
4
Elevador de Santa Justa, Baixa Chiado
Technically part of the public transport service in Lisbon, the Elevador is a must-see for the most amazing views across the city. It was built in the 19th century to connect the downtown area with the upper neighbourhood of Largo de Carmo. Here you will find a beautiful tree-lined square and the gothic ruins of the Convento do Carmo.
5
Padrao dos Descobrimentos, Belem
You will then head west to the beautiful area of Belem, also known as the Museum District. The Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Discovery´s Monument) commemorates that it was from this river bank that Portuguese explorers set sail to explore the world over many years.
6
Torre de Belém
Built in the 16th century, the Belem Tower´s original purpose was to be a fort, protecting Lisbon from incoming raids along the Tagus River. Today it is a fine monument and a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style of architecture.
7
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos
Jeronimos Monastery is a stunning, 500 year old monastery and the most impressive symbol of Portugal's power and wealth during the Age of Discovery.
8
Pastéis de Belém
A visit to Belem has to include tasting the Portuguese pastry Pasteis de Nata (egg custard tart) from the world-famous shop, Pasteis de Belem.

Great tour service. "I wrote about the great time we had with this tour company under another entry, but it bears repeating: excellent time. Classic Portugal is a small business that gives personalized attention and Carlos went above and beyond with our tour. We saw the sights in Lisbon and couldn’t have asked for more. There are so many great things to see in the Capitol it helps to have a guide/driver. This was an affordable, flexible way to see the big sights on both sides of the river. By all means check them out." Jesse - Milwaukee, USA via TripAdvisor
