Your itinerary begins in Lisbon, Portugal’s capital and ends in the stunning coastal region of Arrabida. Along the way you will stop at fairytale Sintra, charming Obidos, impressive Alcobaça, colourful Aveiro, ancient Coimbra, delightful Porto, religious Fatima, medieval Tomar, beautiful Monsaraz and royal Evora. You will have your own certified tour guide who will also drive you across the country. Your guide will enter all monuments with you, sharing with you the history and culture of Portugal, plus you will taste delicious local cuisine specialities and learn all about the Portuguese people and culture. It’s a marvellous experience and you will feel so satisfied with your trip as you would have learnt so much about Portugal and been taken good care of. We will pick you up from your accommodation or the airport in the Lisbon area.
Day 1, Lisbon
We start your amazing tour in Portugal's capital, Lisbon. You will discover Lisbon´s neighbourhoods and admire the monuments, the views and more in Alfama, Baixa Chiado, and Belem. Highlights include the famous hilltop castle Castelo de Sao Jorge, Santa Justa Elevador where you will admire panoramic viewpoints over Lisbon, Jeronimos Monastery (a masterpiece of 16th-century Manueline and late gothic architecture), Discoveries Monument and Torre de Belem.
Day 2, Sintra, Obidos, Alcobaça
We start the day in the fairytale world of Sintra. The most unique and magical destination in Portugal. A place Lord Byron described as his ´glorious Eden.´ Visit the amazing Pena Palace and the mysterious house with many secrets, Quinta da Regaleira. Then we drive up to the charming, medieval village of Obidos. Enter through the walls and wander around the most romantic village in Portugal. We end of the day at the magnificent Alcobaça Monastery; gothic, impressive and spellbinding and once home to 1,000 monks.
Day 3, Aveiro, Coimbra
The day begins with Aveiro. On the shore of a lagoon, Aveiro is a maritime city. You will visit Mosteiro de Jesus, the most famous monument in Aveiro, ride the brightly painted gondola style boats, Moliceiros, up the canal and admire the charming coloured houses in coastal resort Costa Nova. We end the day in Coimbra, home to one of the oldest university's in the world where you will explore the campus which includes a 16th century tower and student prison! You will also visit the Biblioteca Joanina and Chapel of São Miguel.
Day 4, Porto
On the slopes above the Douro Estuary, Porto is a historic merchant city. The charming centre is a World Heritage site, and you’ll be struck by how rich and varied this heritage can be: medieval walls, gleaming Baroque churches, the narrow streets of the Ribeira district and Romanesque Cathedral. Fortified port wine is still stored in warehouses on the south bank of the Douro. You will wander the charming neighbourhood of Cais da Ribeira, admire the Luís I Bridge, visit Clérigos Church and Church of Santa Clara, enjoy a Port wine tasting and experience the stunning and unique Livraria Lello bookshop.
Day 5, Fatima, Tomar
Fatima is a captivating place where millions of people gather each year. Pilgrims celebrate the divine apparitions of the Virgin Mary viewed by the shepherd children which took place in 1917. You will visit the Fatima pilgrimage sites which draw huge crowds from all over the world. The complex includes the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Museum of the Shrine of Fatima. Journey back in time and discover the history of the Knights Templar Order in Portugal. It is a charming and unique town, located in the center of the country, and surrounded by forests, fields, and other beautiful rural towns. You will end the day at the imposing Order of Christ and the awesome and vast complex of Convent of Christ. Both the castle and convent were the headquarters of the Knights Templar until 1314 and of the Order of Christ from 1357 onwards.
Day 6, Monsaraz, Evora
Monsaraz is a charming, hilltop village with a fortified medieval castle at the south of the village, at the highest point. Wander the medieval streets, explore the castle and peruse the beautiful artisan shops. A perfect place to visit in the morning as the village is awakening. A short drive from Monsaraz is the village of São Pedro do Corval, known as Portugal´s largest pottery centre with more than 20 pottery workshops. Finally, explore the city of Evora´s and learn of its cultural ties and history as you visit the significant monuments, such as the Cathedral of Evora, the Roman Temple of Diana and the Chapel of Bones.
Day 7, Arrabida
This beautiful region expands over the southern Setubal peninsular and has towering cliffs, picturesque beaches and ancient ruins dotted amongst the dense mountain vegetation. Sesimbra is a typical picturesque, Portuguese fishing village. Walk along the Marginal next to the beach and taste the local speciality ‘Sour Toast.’ Stop along the beautiful ´secret´ beaches and admire the views from Cabo do Espichel, the most westerly point of Portugal in this region.
