Breathtaking Portuguese beaches

Visit these stunning beaches, unspoilt and wild, to experience the real Portugal. These are our top breathtaking Portuguese beaches...

Arrabida Shore

Our first breathtaking Portuguese beach is Arrabida which is both idyllic and stunning. Just half an hour south of Lisbon you are transported into a different world. Calm waters, aqua blue water and protected seabeds all make up this small paradise. The rich green vegetation climbs the mountains around you. The small strips of beach in this area have an almost private feel. Access is not that easy which means the beaches are less crowded than others near Lisbon. You will need to drive through the Arrabida mountain by car then walk down some steep pathways to arrive at the beaches. Even though these beaches are secluded you can still find a snack bar, a restaurant or two and even rent snorkelling and stand up paddle equipment.

Just outside the Algarve town of Lagos, Ponte da Piedade is a group of rock formations along the coast. This is such a beautiful section of natural wonders it is not to be missed. You can explore the sea caves and grottoes by boat. Sail under the famous arches and marvel at the wonderfully clear water. Each rock formation now has its own name! Some of them include the Camel, the Kissing Couple and the Sphinx. Ponte da Piedade is also a wonderful place to spot wildlife. Many bird species make this headland their habitat including peregrine falcons, egrits, ravens and jackdaws.

Troia beach, Portugal

With soft white sands, calm waters and amazing views of the Arrabida mountains, Troia is an unspoilt gem. Escape the crowds and relax in stillness on these fine beaches. With over 18km of beach wrapping around the coast from Troia Marina all the way down to Comporta you can enjoy such space and calmness. Within the bay you may even spot dolphins! Only now hour from Lisbon this area has its own microclimate with mild temperatures even in winter. Due to the calm waters there are many water sports available such as sailing, windsurfing and stand up paddle.

Praia da Ursa, Sintra
praia da ursa

The steep cliffs of Sintra surround one of Portugal’s finest beaches. Praia da Ursa gets its name from the huge rock formations in the water, one said to be the shape of a bear. The sandy beach is quite small but the beauty is huge! The Michelin guide named it one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and we tend to agree. The only way to access the beach is on foot, down an unmarked path so please take care. But it is so worth it to discover this breathtaking Portuguese beach.

Guincho Beach, Sintra

Lying at the foot of the Sintra mountain this expansive and breathtaking beach is one of our favourite breathtaking Portuguese beaches. With the charging Atlantic waves, Guincho is a prime destination for wind surfers and also brave surfers who like big, powerful waves. The surrounding landscape is one of great beauty with endless beach, white sands and wild sand dunes. Guincho also has the most beautiful sunset. Not to be missed!
